Today, July 3rd, marks the commencement of the 2024 Global Media and Culture Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece. This year’s conference will focus on navigating modern media currents amidst the ever-evolving globalization of today’s world. The two-day event will include lectures and panel discussions by credible professionals and scholars in several fields such as journalism, technology, politics, global culture, media, and diplomacy. The first day began at 9:30 am EEST with opening remarks, and it will conclude with a reception at 9:00 pm EEST at the Capsis Hotel Rooftop Pool and Bar.
A discussion regarding the Impact of Technologies kicked off the event, with lectures about Artificial Intelligence (AI), global Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, and communication through Virtual Reality, followed by a session concerning Global Media, where speakers discussed the delivery of news to young audiences and the role of women in empowering democracy. The conference continued with a session on News Studies, which included lectures about transparency in the news, the use of TikTok by traditional media, and news literacy. The day closed with a final section on Global Cultures, featuring lectures about inter-Asia documentary co-production, Japanese City Pop and Gen Z in the U.S., and the impact of media representation in HBO’s hit show Succession.

The Global Media and Culture Conference is organized by THISAM (Peace Journalism Lab, School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece), along with the Institute for Convergence Culture (Hallym University, Korea), Knowledge Coop for Good Governance (Seoul, Korea) and Global Media and China (Sage).
