DAY 4 & 5 of the 6th International Media Summer Academy

The 6th International Media Summer Academy (THISAM) has already reached its sixth day. During the previous days, participants took part in workshops and lectures held by distinguished speakers.

Organized by the School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Aristotle University Thessaloniki (AUTh), Jean Monnet of European Union Public Diplomacy, and other partners, each year THISAM brings together an impressive group of people passionate about journalism and communication. The topic of the 6th Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy is “New Trends in Media and Journalism”.

On the fourth day of this year’s event (18th of July) participants had the chance to take part in interactive workshops and lectures about disinformation, investigative fact-check reporting, data journalism, communication strategies, cyber security, and new business models in media organizations. The lectures on the fourth day were held by Professor Christopher Guess (researcher Duke University’s Reporters’ Lab), Thomas Miller (Adjunct Professor, Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication, George Washington University), Andreas Panagopoulos (News Director, Journalist), Alicia Fawcett (Cybersecurity expert, McKinsey & Coby) and Shin Dong Kim (Hallym University, Chuncheon, Korea & Chief Director, Knowledge Cooperative for Good Governance).

The 5th day of THISAM (19th of July) started with an interactive workshop about future trends in journalism held by Christophilopoulos Epaminondas (Deputy Chair at Foresight Team, Presidency of the Greek Government), which was followed by a lecture about disinformation and fact-checking delivered by Aaron Sharockman (Vice President for Strategic Partnerships, Poynter Institute for Media Studies & Executive director at PolitiFact). Later in the day, Ludovic Blecher (Head of Google News Initiative Innovation) highlighted the need for innovation in the media industry, and Professor Vasileios Syros (Director of the Early Modern Greek Culture Program, The Medici Archive Project, Italy) compared fake news in the Renaissance and today. Finally, Nello Barile (Associate Professor at IULM University of Milan) delivered a lecture about the way blockchain, NFT, and the Metaverse will affect our post-truth world.

More workshops and lectures will follow until the end of this year’s THISAM on the 22nd of July.
